Their nearly 15-year old song "Killing in the Name," a lead track from their self-titled debut album, will be one of our cover songs in "GTA IV."One of rock's most beloved, influential and enduring groups, Rage Against the Machine is comprised of members Zack de la Rocha (vocals), Tom Morello (guitar), Tim Commerford (bass) and Brad Wilk (drums). With such a diverse array of influences (from Funkadelic and Led Zeppelin to Gil Scott-Heron and the Pixies), they're known for their explosive live performances, but also thought-provoking messages, deeply personal lyrics and unique sound. "Killing in the Name" is described by the band as a "response to a history of oppression," a track that found massive popularity among fans while simultaneously pissing off plenty of others. The song made its debut in 1992 on the band's self-titled debut album, which was originally released through Epic Records before being reissued through Sony Music Entertainment in 2006. "Killing in the Name" earned RATM its first (of many) gold record, but it's also earned plenty of criticism over the years.The song is certainly incendiary, but it's also strangely invigorating. There are no choruses, no bridges, just aggressive verses that lead into grinding guitar riffs. If you're not familiar with the song's lyrics, you might mistake them for a football chant. De la Rocha spits out his words with frenzied intensity in an eerie monotone that begs for repeated listens--and therein lies one of rock's most powerful messages: You can't hear "Killing in the Name" just once.
